The Importance of National Infant Immunization Week

Looking for some good news today? Check out the infant immunization milestones we’ve reached through science:

  • We can now protect infants and children with vaccines from 14 diseases before age two.
  • In the 1950’s, nearly every child developed measles, and sadly, many died. Today, many practicing physicians have never seen a case of measles.
  • Routine childhood immunization has the power to prevent 20 million cases of disease and about 42,000 deaths. It also saves about $13.5 billion in direct costs.
  • Childhood immunization rates for vaccines routinely recommended for children remain at or near record levels.

Vaccines for Children: 20 years of protecting America’s children. The Vaccines for Children program was established in 1994 to make vaccines available to uninsured children.VFC has helped prevent disease and save lives ... big time! CDC estimates that vaccination of children born between 1993 and 2013 will prevent 322 million illnesses (more than the current population of the entire USA); help avoid 732,000 deaths (greater than the population of Boston); and save nearly $1.4 trillion in total societal costs (that includes $295 billion in direct costs) or $4,473 for each American. Unfortunately, some children in the United States still  contract  vaccine preventable diseases because they do not follow the recommended immunization schedule.. One example of the gravity of vaccine preventable deaths comes to us from 2014 when the U.S. experience a record number of measles cases, with 667 cases from 27 states.
